Sundance net nabs rights to 'Aftermath'

Canadian docu based on Webster book

By TAMSEN TILLSON

TORONTO - The Sundance Channel has acquired the Canadian feature-length documentary "Aftermath: The Remnants of War."

Based on the Gelber prize-winning book by Donovan Webster, "Aftermath," skedded for an October premiere, is a study of 20th century war and the people whose job it is to clean up the devastation caused by chemical weapons and landmines and to restore societalequilibrium.

"With the war in Iraq, the film's message has lost none of its potency and should be a powerful reminder that wars don't end when the soldiers return home," producer Ed Barreveld said.

Lensed on location in Russia, Vietnam, Bosnia and France, "Aftermath" was co-produced by Storyline Entertainment of Toronto and the National Film Board of Canada and was directed by Daniel Sekulich.

" 'Aftermath' is extremely topical and relevant at this moment," said Christian Vesper, veepee of acquisitions for the Sundance Channel. "It is exactly the kind of intelligent, challenging and engaging filmmaking we seek to program for Sundance Channel's weekly destination DOC day."
