For Immediate Release: Thursday September 26, 2002 The Gemini-Nominated Feature-Length Documentary Aftermath: The Remnants of War Has Been Selected To Screen At The Hollywood Humanitarian Symposium In Los Angeles October 6 As Part Of The Hollywood Film Festival. With A Prestigious Panel Discussion To Follow Chaired By Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams Continuing to garner the attention it deserves, the Gemini-nominated feature length documentary, Aftermath: The Remnants of War, has been selected to screen as part of the esteemed Hollywood Humanitarian Symposium held during the Hollywood Film Festival in Los Angeles on October 6, 2002. The screening and panel discussion will be chaired by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams, founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. She is also being bestowed with the Festival's Humanitarian Award, for her dedication to fighting injustices and creating social change for the improvement of human rights. This is the second time Aftermath has been paneled by a Nobel Laureate. Last year following the premiere screening at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto, Bobby Muller, co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, was on hand for discussions. The multi-talented trio of Canadian filmmakers - Ed Barreveld, Michael Kot and Daniel Sekulich - make up the team of Storyline Entertainment, who along with the National Film Board, co-produced the mesmerizing doc. Filmed on location in Russia, Vietnam, Bosnia and France, Aftermath follows the true stories of people who continue to work under hazardous conditions to clean up their countries after war, and reveals not only the human suffering caused by the lingering repercussions of toxic chemicals and unexploded artillery, but also that war never really ends. There will be two panel discussions following the screening of Aftermath. First one will include Ms. Williams; Liz Bernstein, Coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines; and Dr. Steven E. Koonin, Provost of the California Institute of Technology. The second panel consists of Caroline Baron, Producer Monsoon Wedding, Founder of FilmAid International; Deborah Oppenheimer, Executive Producer of The Drew Carey Show and Producer of the Oscar-winning doc Into The Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport; Lorenzo Soria, Chairman of the Board - Hollywood Foreign Press; Robin Groves, Senior Representative, UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees); Dr. Betsy McLane, Ph.D., HFF Public Affairs Liaison. The Hollywood Humanitarian Council was created to give a voice to the voiceless through the visual medium. It's members include six Nobel Peace Prize Laureates such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a wide variety of politicians, actors, producers and directors, such as Martha Coolidge, Matt Damon, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Danny Glover, Arthur Hiller, Norman Lear and Paul Mazursky, just to name a few.
